Of course we all know the musical genius Ed Warby for quite a while. Most of you know him of Gorefest, one of
Holland’s greatest bands in the extreme metal scene. Others might know Ed of his drum work of Ayreon. But Ed had another desire and that was making Doom-metal.
So he started The 11
th Hour, a nice Doom project. Mister Warby wrote all the lyrics and musical arrangements himself, he also played all the instruments and did half of the vocal work. His voice is nice and clear and is very suitable for Doom-metal, but good Doom can’t go without some deep grunts, that’s why Ed asked colleague Rogga Johansson (o.a. Edge of Sanity) to do the heavy duty on this album. And the deep and raw grunt of Rogga keep the balance very real on this album. The lyrical theme of this record is about a terminal ill patient which describes his last days. A perfect theme for Doom-metal. Heavy but sometimes almost epic keyboards parts together with low guitar lines are the main ingredients on this album. Although the sound is a bit atmospheric I do miss some emotional depts. That’s why the album had not got me in his power. Even after a couple of spins the songs are not stuck in my brain and this is a pity. But after all this is not a bad album, far from it. And if these two ex-
Death-metal musicians keep working together they can become very good.
