Although active since the late 80s Bernard Fate's output has so far been limited to three demos; two of which were issued in the mid-90s and one that dates back to 2006. This is his first full-length effort. A minimal kind of synthpop, with some touches of EBM and darkwave is an appropriate way to describe the music of Bernard Fate. Straightforward catchy and upbeat tunes are absent, the tone is stark, detached and serious without getting too ominous, bombastic or dramatic. Bernard's vocals come to you from a distance, faint and hazy. The addition of a violin on "Secrets" and "No regret" gives these tracks an extra melancholic, bleak accent. A mechanical, industrial-tinged approach appears on "Empathy" with a stark result, the ballad "Soul mates" is the only track that gives a dash of hope. Minimalism is the main asset of "Why", "Nobody screams" and "The last sheet". With "No regret" and, to a lesser extend, "Empathy" as the only danceable tracks on We this album relies mainly on atmosphere. They grey, clouded nature of the songs will not captivate everyone as the lack of gripping melodies is felt, but for anyone who is willing to wallow in elementary, sombre synth sounds this album is worth checking out.
