X Was Never Like This is perhaps the most accessible album from Displacer so far. This is not only thanks to the catchy electro character of the tracks that hold the middle between downtempo electronic music, electro, drum ‘n bass and idm, but also because two tracks feature the vocals from Victoria Lloyd (a.o. known from Claire Voyant). This is not the only collaboration on this album since several more tracks have been made together with others such as Keef Baker, Daniel Myer, Marching Dyamics and Broken Fabiola. This all results in strikingly catchy and exhilarating music, which gets the feet moving as well as tickles the imagination at moments with its cinematographic qualities. It has to be said that it takes a while to get used to since this release is way more catchy than the also excellent releases Cage Fighter Lullaby and The Witching Hour, but in the end everything falls in place and the organic character and refined experiment gets the attention it deserves. The accessible with triphop and electro flirting quality was before already present and audible with Displacer and on this album this aspect has been developed further with the addition of Victoria Lloyd. The most striking tracks are ‘Never Compromise’ which sounds at least as catcy as ‘X Was Never Like This’ in the remix from Daniel Myer or the excellent tracks tracks ‘Elbows Bent at Right Angles’ and ‘Windmill’ of which the remixes of both tracks, made by Broken Fabiola and Marching Dynamics are equally cool. X Was Never Like This takes a little time to digest but concluded it proves to be a record where all aspects of the music of Displacer fall perfectly in place.
