A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky

<< Back

Ad•ver•sary is the powernoise/IDM project of Jairus Khan. In 2008 he made quite a name for himself with his album ‘Bone Music’, which was available as regular cd edition on Tympanik Audio, but could also be downloaded for free in high quality. The fact that the music itself was also of high quality made this an interesting choice. Now it’s a year or so later, and Jairus has a follow-up. It’s not actually a completely new release, but a collection of remixes from fellow artists like Stendeck, Iszoloscope, ESA, Autoclav1.1 and Salt. There are however also a couple of new tracks.

The album kicks of with a remix from Cyanotic of the successful track ‘Ancients’. The remix changes the sound of the original with more bleeps and glitches instead of more ‘ancient’ sound design. The noticeable rhythm is still there, but it’s altered a bit in sound. ‘Waiting For Gira’ is remixed by ESA. It still contains the tribal drumming and guitar sounds of the original, but with a stronger beat and some interesting vocals nearing the end. ‘Creatura (And The Sea)’ is a new song, which is a very atmospheric combination of groovy tribal rhythms and ambient pads. Too bad it’s very short. ‘Just (Spooks)’ gets a remix by Iszoloscope and is now called ‘Just (Spookier Remix By Iszoloscope)’. The song contains the very recognizable break-beats of Iszoloscope and mixes it with the piano melodies of the original; only the melodies are more upfront now then in the original, which works really good. An excellent and very powerful song!  ‘Bone Music’ gets remixed by Disparition, a project I’m not very familiar with. The remix has the heart of the original, although it’s perhaps more spherical and slower. Also the noisy end part is left out in favor of a more ambient ending. The atmospheric powernoise track ‘No Exit’ gets a remix by Candle Nine, which I also never heard of. It’s doing a great job of making the track more atmospheric. The powernoise elements are still there, but in a more IDM noise-glitch approach. ‘Friends of Father’ gets remixed by Monoculture. The song starts with a vocal sample before it transforms into an even harder breakcore track then the original. ‘Dresden’ is a new song, which is nicely mid-tempo and aggressive. Another remix from ‘Waiting For Gira’ comes from the mighty Stendeck. Just as with ESA, Stendeck is also a great project that combines beautiful melodies and serene moods with hard beats. This song combines all the powerful elements Stendeck is known for. ‘Darker’ is again a new song. This one is more of an abstract industrial soundscape, devoid of any beats. Synkro takes the second remix for ‘Just’. The melody is still intact, although the beats are harder and there are some acid sounds worked into the track. The third remix from ‘Waiting For Gira’ comes from Phylr. This one sounds very different from the other two versions and is very groovy and funky. It’s very light and accessible in sound. Pretty interesting transformation! The originally very long, and intensely freaky, track ‘Number Nine’, gets a more compact remix by Autoclav1.1. The remix sounds actually very different from the original. Were the original was more chaotic and diverse in sound, the remix sounds more structured. It’s still a very powerful track with a gritty sound. Ant-zen label owner Stefan Alt as Salt takes care of the third remix of ‘Just’. This one deviates the most from the original. The recognizable melody is used more atmospherically and the track is full of glitchy rhythms and sounds. A very interesting and good remix! The last track is smash out. It’s a track from Cyanotic, remixed by Ad•ver•sary and Dirtybunny in a convenient ‘Industrial Strength Mix’. With the vocals added, it sounds like a combination of Skinny Puppy and Ministry finding their way into the powernoise scene whilst still recognizing there EBM roots. Just wait till you hear it!

A very good remix album. Although some songs get remixed three times, all the tracks have a reasonable different sound, so it doesn’t get repetitive. Together with the addition of a couple of new tracks this is really an album you should have in you collection!
