BluntForceVolume

<< Back

We Got This far is an industrial rock band from California which in sound seem pretty much influenced by NIN, yet also manage to create a sound of their own on the debut album Blunt Force Volume. At first I had to get used to the somewhat dreary vocals but after a while it starts to become less annoying since it gets clear that the music has much variation to offer and the album contains a couple of really good tracks. The most striking tracks are the heavy industrial rock songs ‘Like Dying’, ‘Cave in’ and ‘Bludgeon’ in which also the beats contribute to the powerful effect, the subtle ominous sounding track ‘Anywhere But Here’ and the dark ballad ‘Sedona’, in which the influence of A Perfect Circle is obvious. The remaining material unfortunately is not that good. Some tracks are too dreary or sound too much similar to other bands, like ‘Mistep’ or ‘Endgame’, that resemble Marilyn Manson too much, although the use of a banjo in the latter track is a nice add. Positive exception is the atmospheric and very dark nine minutes long track ‘So This is Doom’ in which the lights go completely dim. The album contains a bonus track with the Dismantled remix of the track ‘Someone Somewhere’, which is very much recognizable as such due to the typical sound of Dismantled. We Got This Far does stand out with Blunt Force Volume in the sound and production department, most likely thanks to Tom Barker (a.o. NIN, Static-X). We Got This Far has released a nice debut with Blunt Force Volume which has some pretty strong tracks and therefore it is a nice new band to keep an eye on. If the band comes up with an even more consistent album and a European label deal, the success in Europe will definitely follow, although it remains a tough market for ‘American industrial’ music.
