Tapage seems to be a hard en fast worker. Last year we already had ‘The Insitute Of Random Events’ and now we have ‘Fallen Clouds’, again on Tympanik Audio. Formerly known for his more (industrial) hardcore output, he went back to his more IDM roots and got signed at Tympanik Audio.
‘Fallen Clouds’ continues were ‘The Institute Of Random Events’ left off, perhaps less industrial and breakcore in sound and more clicks ‘n cuts IDM. We get again treated with a long stream of tracks, which results into more than an hour of music. This new release is worked out among a sound concept which is maintained throughout the album. Some things that were said about his former album were that it stayed somewhat the same throughout its duration. This is again the same on his new work. I wouldn’t call it a gripe, since it’s an artistic choice and it’s all really well made. Very striking are the little melodies that turn up now and again. A lot of the album is made up of rather clinical clicks ‘n cuts, when a sweet melody comes through, it creates some genuine emotion. That’s really one of the strengths of this album, and of Tapage’s music in general. Like after the more experimental IDM structure of ‘Flap Fish’, the next song, ‘ML7W’, uses some very nice string elements and melodies, which therefore has an even greater impact.
A very good and interesting album. Perhaps on the one hand it could feel somewhat monotone in places, on the other hand this works great with the more melodic parts. It really keeps you interested the whole way through and really has a kind of mysteriousness to it. The album also really benefits from the track order, which is excellently chosen. Because of those points, it elevates the album somewhat than the average IDM release. Maybe not the most original IDM release we’ve heard, but what’s on record is very well made and with a lot of passion, and it does get better with each listen. So, grab your goodie bag, head to Tympanik Audio country and buy yourself a copy of this very nice release!
