Epiphora

SE is a new electro project from Germany. SE are the initials of its sole member, Sebastian Ehmke. Before this project he supposedly has created some full-length album, shared mostly among friend. ‘Epiphora’ is his debut album under his SE moniker.
Epiphora is a clinical condition which results in an overflow of tears over ones face. This is because it constitutes insufficient tear film drainage from the eyes. So far for the medical explanation. The title does however has a nice symbolic element to it, the music is so emotional that ones eyes keep on tearing.
The music sounds like what is becoming a prototype Tympanik Audio sound. Not meant in a negative way, but that the music contains all the goods were Tympanik Audio is known for. SE has a nice emotional side to it which is well realized on this album. Lots of the tracks are a combination of complex IDM structures, nice melodies and sweeping lush synth pads. There is sometimes a very simplistic or efficient element to the music, in between the more complex beats and sounds that makes it so good and effective, like a little melody for example. This is also what makes the music more human and less computerized.
One of the tracks, ‘Hitchhiker’, also appeared on the Tympanik Audio sampler ‘Approach Lights 09’. This track is very nice and is a perfect introduction of SE’s music.
The disc end with three remixes. The first one is by the also relatively new and very interesting project Flaque. This is a very good and atmospheric remix of the song ‘23R0 & TH3 5T4R5’. The last two are very nice remixes of the track ‘15mg’ by quench and by dnn & huron.
SE is definitely a project to watch. The album stays interesting for its entire duration and keeps jumping in and out your head long after you have listened to it. Again Tympanik Audio takes care of nicely designed packaging; a stylishly designed syringe. ‘Epiphora’ is limited to only 333 copies, so be sure to order it soon!
