The Things That Disappear When I Close My Eyes

<< Back

I think Totakeke doesn’t need an introduction anymore. Last releases are all well-received. The combination of IDM structures and sometimes melancholic melodies, but also rave and noise elements, has made this project very successful. In between the last release there were the free downloadable mp3 album ‘Past:Present:Future’ and the mp3 album ‘Fragments Of Thoughts’, which could be received when pre-ordering from the site.

The new album by Totakeke is again impressive earcandy and is presented as massive two disc release (the second disc contains a lot of remixes), around 2,5 hours of music! The album again does appear to have some sort of concept behind it, but not in an overly abundant or distractive way, which is very nice. With the enormous amount of tracks, it’s going to be bible work to mention all the tracks, so I’m going to talk about some tracks that for this moment stick out.

The opening track of the first cd, ‘The Forgotten Past’, starts very nice with some piano keys and strings. Later on beats, samples and other electronic sound are added. A very atmospheric and promising start! ‘Disconnected Inside’ has a kind of retro analogue electro feel to it. Also a very joyous track. ‘Permanent Note’ also feels as a very fine track with a catchy rhythm. The title track ‘The Things That Disappear When I Close My Eyes’ is very atmospheric with lots of nice sounds and rhythm. It also has a kind of action-adventure game quality to it. The song will stick in your head for some time. The closer of the first cd is a beatless soundscape which is very effective.

The first song of the second disc, ‘Pull the Plug (mix by Totakeke)’, has a nice retro-futuristic sound to it. The remix by Pneumatic Detach, ‘Anterograde Amnesia’, contains the usual beat violence Pneumatic Detach is known for. Interesting about this is he keeps the beat overdose out till almost halfway the song, then he goes loose with it. With ‘Permanent Note’ Zentriert Ins Antlitz remix the song with their own style of spherical sounds and IDM structures so it becomes a very warm and dreamy track. Also Autoclav1.1 creates a very effective atmospheric remix of the track ‘Lost and Falling’ with sounds that will stick into your head for some time. ‘Can’t Feel Time’, another new song by Totakeke, makes good use of piano keys and electronic sounds to evolve into an amazing sound world. Also Lucidstatic drops by to remix the title track. The song has the typical Lucidstatic sounds, though starts of pretty efficient with some hard beats. The last part of the song gets the breakcore makeover, together with Totakeke’s analogue synth sounds make for an amazing climax of the song! One of the more interesting secrets in the IDM/electro world of the last period is Access to Arasaka. Here he remixes the track ‘Contusions’ into a very spacey and bleepy sound world with the aid of his own brand of very spherical pads. Flint Glass turns ‘Patient Him’ into a Lovecraftian underworld. ‘Memoria’ gets turned around by Disharmony with all kinds of subtle sound effects and layers of synths. We end this epic journey with ‘Elekatota Three: The Other Side Of Things That Disappear’, which has a kind of nostalgic feel to it.

Another winner for Totakeke! A massive two disc experience which all lovers of IDM, ambient and electro should definitely pick up. Together with the very high quality of the remixes it’s an essential Tympanik Audio release!
