EO2: Emerging Organisms vol.2

<< Back

Throughout the last couple of months I reviewed a fair share of albums from the Tympanik Audio label and I really liked them all. A lot of the music they release is often IDM related, but there is a lot more to be discovered there. They are also great at designing packing for the albums, which is often very beautiful. They’ve become a rather great alternative to the Hymen Records label and are becoming just as great.

This compilation follows in the footsteps of the former ‘Emerging Organisms: Hidden Forms, Volume One’ and does again deliver very high quality tracks from well-known, lesser known and totally unknown projects. This compilation is again divided onto two cd’s, totaling into 26 tracks. To go by them all would mean this review would turn into a book about the current IDM/electro music scene, which isn’t really a smart thing to do. Also it’s more fun to discover most of the tracks by yourself without any preconceived notions. The tracklist is again well put together, with the well-known acts deliver their usual quality they are known for. Some surprisingly good unknown project to me is Access to Arasaka, who creates a combination of IDM, soothing synthlines and some breakcore approaches. You can also go to his website (http://www.accesstoarasaka.com/v1/) and download a lot of free EP’s. Check this project out because it’s really good! There’s also going to be an album from him on Tympanik Audio soon, so that’s great news. Other great little known (for me at least) projects are Flaque, Subheim, Aphorism, Rope, Anhedonia, Atmogat, Sincere Trade, Blackfilm en Lights Out Asia. Although I like almost all tracks equally, special mention goes out to this compilations opener, ‘The Glow’ by Hecq, which is a great Badalamenti-esque soundscape, which really places you in Lynchland, like Twin Peaks!

Compilations can always be a hit or miss, but this is definitely a BIG hit! All the tracks are great with no filler included. The better known acts give their usual best, but it’s the rather unknown projects that push this compilation to a higher order. If you like lush, experimental and high quality electronica, you’ve got is all here. So if you plan to buy only one release from Tympanik Audio this year, buy this and you get all the ear candy the label has to offer! An essential purchase for people who consider themselves big fans of electronic music!
