With modest means (a PC, keyboard, sequencing programmes, acoustic and electric guitar and a simple microphone) Reptile71 aka Paul Tetteroo creates a dreamy sonic landscape with rhythmic touches. He has a mild, pleasant voice that suits the nature of the songs well. Recent years have seen more of these one-man projects, for example I Synthesist and Alan Replica. With In Dust Paul Tetteroo shows that he has enough creativity to be on par with many similar contemporary artists.
The opener "All wrong" features an audio fragment of the 1951 black-and-white science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still. Intertwined electronic percussion, a jingling, melancholic guitar and floating synths form the basis. "Home" is distinctly richer due to the vocals, bass guitar and acoustic guitar. The distorted guitar in combination with the dynamic electronic percussion during the second half of "New times" gives this song a disturbing touch. "Drag" contains ongoing accentuated and rhythmic percussion, delicate acoustic guitar and desolate synth tunes. "Always a way" sounds like a mix between early OMD and Faith era The Cure, also because of Justin Curfman's voice that resembles that of Robert Smith. Although catchy and poppy would not be the best words to describe the music of Reptile71, this track is probably the most accessible and memorable one. The contrast between the percussive cadence and the dignified, cold synths gives "Upside down" a mesmerizing nature, also because of the conjuring vocals. Finespun, airy guitars characterize the dream pop of "Hunger". The slow-paced "In Dust (move on)" is another reflective, soothing track, "Harder and harder" could file under dark pop. "Crystal" with its ongoing subtle bell tunes, elementary guitar play and floating synths smoothly changes over into the closing track "Saved". Both tracks induce a kind of trance. The high degree of 'do-it-yourself' on In Dust recalls the 80's when such minimalistic electronic music was fashionable. Sometimes you just don't need an entire band to come up with a set of convincing songs.
