Mondegreen

<< Back

Mondegreen (which means; the mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase) is the title of an outstanding album by Concrete Cookie & The Maggot Farmer. Both new names to me but after some research I found out they have been around for a long time. They met up in 1996 and have been busy since. The album, released on “Force of Nature” comes in a nice package with quite minimal but nonetheless striking artwork and an awesome logo. It really fits the content on the disc which also pretty minimal and, as stated above, quite good.

The best description I can give for the songs on the album is haunting soundscapes. Normally this kind of music ends up being a bit boring to listen to after a while because, in my opinion, it so often just lacks the ingredients to keep you interested. This time however something is different. The whole album plays out as one enchanting trip into darkness. All the songs flow into each other but are still distinctive enough on there own. Some very nice textures, atmospheres, wicked sounds and occasionally some rhythm make for a diverse and gripping package. Great to hear a soundscape production that gets it right and one that is actually “fun” to listen to. Even the seventh song, “Polonium Symphony”,  which lasts for almost 16 minutes tries to avoid becoming repetitive (and succeeds) by using constantly evolving layers of sound and interesting details. The other highlight of the album, if I would really have to pick it apart,  is the fourth track “Book of margins”. But I would rather recommend listening to the album in one take, which in this case (soundscape orientated music) is really something special for me.

Overall, a great album that really surprised me with a unique flavour of minimal but ultimately gripping recordings. Plus some more credits for the truly awesome logo!!
