Parachèvement De L esquisse

<< Back

A two-CD compilation that offers a representative overview of Opera Multi Steel's musical career, from the debut EP Rien up to 2003's Une Idylle En Péril, that's what Parachèvement De L´esquisse encompasses. These masters on the clavier from Bourges, France have been around since the first half of the 80's and are known for their mix of synthpop, modern classical and new wave. The songs are arranged in a chronological order, which makes it easier to hear the musical evolution of Opera Multi Steel. The early work of Opera Multi Steel is characterized by a minimal, relatively clinical approach that relies heavily on synths. Unlike most synthpop bands of that era the sound has a majestic touch, with a leaning towards religious themes and timbres. These references to religion became a constant element in the style of Opera Multi Steel. "Cathédrale", the title track of their debut LP is a fine example of those formative years. Their sophomore effort, 1988's A Contresens, broadens the range of instruments. More acoustic instruments and more emphasis on the vocals, "Oraisons minimes" acts as good representative of that development. On 1990's Les Douleurs De L'Ennui this trend is further eleborated on, just listen to "Le Phare". A remarkable track on that album is "Si c'est ainsi", it features fragments of a chanted Quran verse. Etnic fusion of some sort. 1992's Stella Obscura is well represented by six tracks, the frivolous "Mieux les hommes vivent" being the most catchy song. "Tes lèvres, un avat-son" is a dusky, dignified track with dreamy vocals by Catherine Marie. The toy robot intro of "Chambre froide", the ominous vocals on "Regrets qui s'écaillent", the tubular bells on "Lunettes solaires", 1996's Histoires de France was another creative success. "Des saints et des miracles" is most alluring, rhythmical as well as melodical. "Parfums Esthers" is a swinging, brisk song with middle eastern accents, "Toujours ces chants" is introvert and reflective. "Les délices de la moisson" features Arabic-tinged vocals by Carine Grieg, the combination of brittle, shadowy guitar play and solemn, organ-like synths of "Heure matinale" makes for a dignified sound. 2003's Une Idylle En Péril again refers to religious themes with the sacred tunes of "Christ", the gentle "Plusieurs «Amen»" and the melodic "Angélise". The peaceful closing track "Par ici où l'homme trépasse" contains an excerpt from the mass Mille Regretz by the renaissance composer Josquin Des Prez to add up to the already classical nature of the song. Opera Multi Steel has maintained a constant quality over the years, also because they stayed true to their sound. A sound that is still unique and has proven to be multifaceted and timeless.
