Fabriksampler V2

Compilation albums can always be tricky thing. A lot of compilations are label samplers, which mostly contain tracks already on cd or in the near future available. Some compilations are more concept albums, which includes mostly exclusive tracks which the artists created with a kind of concept in mind, like ‘Untitled - A Tribute To Zdzislaw Beksinski’ for example, which is based around the works of the artist Beksinski. This compilation is both; it is a label sampler, but is also contains only exclusive tracks which all work very nice together.
The PharmaFabrik label exists already from 1994, but their discography on Discogs isn’t that big. This compilation is also a sequel to their ‘Fabriksampler Vol.1’ from 2006. In checking the artist line-up, is see some interesting names like Henrik Nordvargr Björkk, Sunao Inami and Lull, so my expectations are becoming rather high.
The album starts with a track by Final, called ‘4am Internal’. This track is very atmospheric and has a lot of sounds going on as the song progresses. It also uses the sound of what seems like a processed guitar. The second track is by Pure H, with the song ‘Kogel’. This one is more experimental electronica oriented. It also uses guitars and is a bit more dense and noisy then the former track. The next track is by WoO, with ‘Life Bloom’. This song uses crackling sounds what could be from an old vinyl record. It has some nice melodies and has a somewhat progressive structure. Then there’s a track by Go Tsushima, with ‘Mu’. This is the first with a discernable beat in it. It is very warm and nice glitchy electronica. The track by Left Eye Dominant, ‘Grand Hysterie’, sounds like the track title suggests; this one uses a lot of percussive elements with strange vocal sounds, it’s a more hysterical track. The next track is by two artists, Alexei Borisov and Tania Stene with the song ‘Disclose’. It is a somewhat weird and alien sounding ambient/electronica track, but still feels warm in a way. Track 7 is by the almighty Henrik Nordvargr Björkk, with a track called ‘Thyras Ande Och Arv’. It has the usual pitch-black ambient approach and is very layered. It’s also a drastic change in sound from the former tracks, which weren’t very dark and more electronica oriented. An interesting choice and an excellent track, but that should be no surprise from the master of many genres. This track also uses some strange alien vocal sounds. Near the end of the song there are some glitchy sounds added. The next track is from The Cherry Blues Project, with ‘Stars’, which continues the dark approach, set by Nordvargr. It starts of somewhat Lynchian and then becomes partly glitch, but also uses a lot of percussive elements. It sounds very much like we are standing in a factory where all the machines work in a rhythmic structure. Dodecahedragraph has a track called ‘Atan3fftrack’. It is a combination of sweet electronica melodies merged with abstract, and hard, sound collages. Track 10 is from the dark Sunao Inami, with ‘The End of Spiral’. The track is very dark throughout and uses a lot of drones and is very spherical. The last track is from Lull, with ‘The Gulley’. This one continues with drones, but is al lot deeper, which is what Lull is known for. This is also a very dark track, but has a very quiet approach and deeper in sound.
This is a great compilation. One of the best things is that all the tracks are mixed into each other, so it’s one flow, which really works in its advantage here. Standouts are the tracks from Nordvargr Björkk, Sunao Inami and Lull, which is no surprise, but also the tracks by Final and The Cherry Blues Project are very good. Actually, all of the tracks are very good and form a whole. So, if you are into experimental electronica, drones and dark-ambient, be sure to buy this compilations, ‘cause it contains all this.
