Wanderer

<< Back

Almost three years the Russian folk band Waldsonne worked on their debut album. When a big and well-known band is taking that long to record a new album, you could expect a masterpiece. But when a new, unknown band needs three years to record their first album, a masterpiece is not exactly the first thing in mind. And to be honest, Wanderer is not a masterpiece. Far from that. Waldsonne releases a not so special folk album, which sounds acceptable, but also has some very weak spots. For instance: the first thirty seconds of Call for the sun are irritating and the lyrics of this songs are too simplistic. Further more the vocals of Veronika Martynova are tedious and this female singer has a strong Russian accent, through which the German and English lyrics don’t sound right enough. At the end of the album Martynova proves that she can sing, when it’s time for Woodland Songs, which is sang in the Russian language. It makes the vocals of this female singer more pure and especially more relaxing. The instrumental songs at this album are also good, and these are the moments Waldsonne brings back memories of Empyrium. The musicians get enough space here to show us what they can, and that’s a good thing. But thanks to the German and English lyrics the complete level of this album is falling down. Although it’s impossible to understand the Russian lyrics, I do hope Waldsonne will sing more in its own language at the next album.
