On this seventh album of Theatres des Vampires you can hear
from the start that the band has progressed. The opening track 'Kain' starts
with a catchy melody and a lot of variation is displayed in this track. Both Sonya’s
and other male vocals can be heard, which are sound and variable. The second
track starts much more experimental and electronic, the harsh voice of Sonya
followed by singing in a low but natural voice makes this an attractive
variation on the gothic rock sound displayed all over the album. The three
melody lines, created by guitars, piano and vocals add to this variation. The 4th
track is a bit more predictable, you can feel the melody and rhythm changes
about half a minute in advance. However, despite the predictability they
improve the song with the wailing vocals of Sonya, and the outro with the
piano. 'From the Deep' is a melancholic song where the female vocals sometimes
seem like an attempt to create a similarity to the ever so popular female
fronted gothic metal bands. The fact that Sonya keeps using her natural voice
at least shows that they want to keep their own identity, even when attempting
to fit in with a more popular sound. 'Blood Addiction' compensates for the
previous track and shows the full capacity of Theatres des Vampires. They
should let themselves go like this more often; especially the screams are well
performed. The same guy proves that he can sing just as well in the following
track. 'Two Seconds' makes use of slightly distorted vocals to emphasize them
in the body of the song, whereas the chorus is sung once more. This creates a
gap between these parts of the songs where the rest of the atmosphere remains
more or less the same. The last song of the album is the title track; it stands
out from the rest of the album completely. Whispers are used together with high
vocals, acoustic sounds versus electric guitars, combined in such manner that
both atmospheres are present at the same time throughout the track.
The whole album has many different aspects and sometimes
reminds you of Asrai, The Dreamside, Moonspell, The Skeptical Minds, and Evanescence.
The only disadvantage disturbing me in almost every song is the strong accent
of Sonya, I hope she will find the time to solve this on the next album. If so I
would like to see many more productions from this band in the future.
