Beyond the Pale (with The Dark Poets)

<< Back

Gary Lucas is one of the most progressive guitarists around, a.o. known from his Gods & Monsters project and his work with Captain Beefheart, Lou Reed and Jeff Buckley (Lucas wrote the songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’ together with Buckley), but what is less known is that he also made soundtracks for films and television and worked together with electronic music artists such as Future Sound of London, DJ Spooky and Adrian Sherwood amongst others and the music on this album actually comes closer to that. Yet, not completely. It is a cooperation with the electronic music band The Dark Poets, while the blues and psychedelic rock influences from Lucas are very distinctly integrated in the music.   Partly Beyond the Pale is comprised of dark experimental electronic ambient techno and drum ‘n bass tracks in combination with the typical guitar sound of Lucas and partly of reworked songs from the extensive collection of Lucas, among which a reinterpretation of the original sketches for the songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’ that Gary Lucas co-wrote with Jeff Buckley. This results in a pretty adventurous dark electronic album with rhythm ‘n blues roots, which is not boring for one second. American Southern Voodoo meets British electronic music. Recommended.
