I, Mortal

<< Back

The Frisian Dimaeon is a metal band which is strongly influenced by progressive doom metal bands, with, at least in the past, an obvious reference to Opeth. The band regularly played in the region where they live but as for now doesn't seem to get any further than that. After the demo Echoes in a Dying World from 2005 new material has now been released with the two track demo I, Mortal. Only two songs, but it are two lengthy songs in which the band explores the boundaries of their potential. This is musically quite rewarding with a good dynamics between aggression and tranquil parts. It is not really that original but the death-doom with a progressive influence is being played well and has enough variation to keep it interesting. Most notably, the keyboard parts are quite charming in both songs. The moments with the harsh and heavy riffing ensure a good balance. The big disadvantage of the music of Dimaeon however is that the clean vocal parts of Ferdinand do not deliver at all. His grunts sound deep, nothing wrong with that, but the clean vocals do not add to the overall effect of the songs this way and this needs to be worked on. Musically it is nevertheless pretty good and there seems to be progression in the development of Dimaeon as well. Hopefully, the band gets some more chances to present themselves to a wider audience at concerts.
