The Blue

It's autumn again, traditionally a good time for the lovers of depressing music. This year the lovers of melancholic gothic/doom metal can have a little party again, because the great new album of The Old Dead Tree and the surprisingly good debut of Ghost Brigade are accompanied by Novembre's new output, "The Blue".
To be honest, I have never been really impressed with the Italian band. Still I clearly progression throughout the years, so eventually they should reach a high level. "The Blue" is another logical step forward in Novembre's career and actually the first album that I really enjoy. In the past, the band often got accused of sounding too much like Opeth, but they've really found their own style, somewhere between doom/death metal and a Katatonia-like atmosphere with a warm, Italian atmosphere.
Atmosphere also seems to be Novembre's key priority, because even after listening to "The Blue" a lot of times, I'm still having trouble distincting the individual song from eachother. but I still enjoy listening to the album. Great melancholic guitar work, a dreamy setting and an occasional outburst to avoid boredom, that's what Novembre has to offer here. The weak spot in this all is and will probably always be the whiny vocals with a strong Italian accent, but somehow that also fits into the bigger picture of the music. So if you like Opeth, Katatonia or The Old Dead Tree, "The Blue" wouldn't look so bad in your cd collection.
