Ofrendas de Luz a Los Muertos

<< Back

In Aztec culture they used to celebrate death as it is part of an eternal cycle. The Mexicans still celebrate this festivity on the first and second of November called Fiesta de la Muerte. It is on these days the spirits of the deceased come back to earth and celebrate with the living. People make altars of sugar cane and sugar skulls to commemorate their deceased family and friends. The cemeteries are decorated with colourful flowers and skulls and people are dancing and singing.
It was this festivity I was thinking about when I took the cover out of the envelope. When I heard the music I had to think about souls finding their way back from beyond.

With strange squeaking high pitched voices the spirits sing. “Ofrendas Luz Los Muertos” sounds dark and spooky with throbbing low end basses and buzzing sounds like bees. Feedback sets in and the throbbing increases. Ghostly the voices find their way to the surface of a pitch black earth. The music is dark and is grinding your stereo installation. I don’t think every stereo can handle these basses. The atmosphere is tense and creepy while the spirits drift through the air. Shamans recite their mantras grumbling and mumbling.
“Ofrendas de Luz a Los Muertos” is a kind of ritualistic ambient in which throbbing echoing pulsations waking the dead and shaken the ground. As the track makes progress the music goes toward industrial and become more rhythmic while the vocals sound more possessed and add an uneasy feeling to the music.
“Ofrendas de Luz a Los Muertos” sounds more like the living are entering the land of the dead and have to struggle to get back. This is an electrified piece of haunted music with great tenseness.

In second track “Esqueleto de Chapulín” the spirits are looking to find their way through water. The sounds get swirling while a dark voice starts to speak. The atmosphere is haunted. There is a wide spectrum of low frequencies in this sinister music.

This is a charming release with a morbid and enigmatic atmosphere but fascinating until the end which almost sounds sacred as the shamans sing their devoted song. Ofrendas  de Luz a Los Muertos is a very original release and is giving a new definition to dark ambient.
