With the name Aaron Spectre you will quickly think of harsh breakbeats or the grindcore maelstrom of Drumcorps. This first full length album however is the complete opposite, as it has tranquil glitch and downtempo music. The first sounds you will hear are that of a dulcimer that has been given a very spatial and reverbing effect. A soothing feeling falls over you and you will find yourself in the mountains of a country such as Morocco or Lebanon, staring over the valleys. An eagle flies over while you are enjoying the view, with the sun burning on your head.
Next the atmosphere of the sounds becomes more downtempo and electronic yet the relaxed feeling remains. Lost Tracks really are tracks to get lost in for a while. In a sound that consists of glitch and drones in a dark track such as ‘The Wrong Fuel’’ and glitchy hiphop breaks in ‘Down in the Gutter’. Furthermore featured are organic layers of sound, broken beats, beautiful atmospheres and intricate melodies. You will also hear acoustic sounds such as a guitar in the tracks ‘Voices’, ‘Ocean’ and ‘Degrees’, played by Jon Derosa.
Do not underestimate this, the material is made with much attention and has all sorts of little details that at first do not really stand out yet play an important role to create the apparantly light sound. The material on Lost Tracks has been written between 2001 and 2007, but compiled on one album it sounds strikingly coherent. The track ‘Ocean’ actually is a remix by Aaron Spectre of a song from Aarktica. Also ‘Break Ya Neck’ is a remix, this time of a song from Lapsed. Here again hiphop fragments yet drowned in layers of ambient with Oriental sounds.
In ‘Degrees’ Kazumi sings with an enchantingly beautiful voice. The vocal tracks most notably are slightly melancholic of atmosphere. The whole recording breathes a relaxed and sometimes even meditative atmosphere anyway. Also have a look at the splendid cover of this cd with photo’s of a lost railroad track where the trees have taken back the land and the stones of erosion have already covered the railway again. Lost tracks. In image and sound and truly great.
