Shot Love on a Back Line

<< Back

You take a generous shot of blues, a dash of post-punk and wry, astringent lyrics and you've got The Holy Kiss. This rather strange combination of styles has been tried before, but hasn't recieved that much attention since about two decades ago. In the 80's, bands like Crime & The City Solution and The Mekons also mixed post-punk with genres (country and blues) that were not easily associated with it. The Holy Kiss revives that special blend with their full length debut Shot Love on a Back Line.

"Love Left Me" and "Birds Sing Bass" feature disturbing, brooding slide guitar and unfettered, tense percussion. And that coincides with the matters addressed, because those are not the most lighthearted ones. Singer Matty Rue Morgue (what's in a name) seems to be overwhelmed by sadness, cynicism, concern and anger. "A Dancehall Goodbye" is a sneering love song, bitterly he sings about betrayal and loss. With a name like The Holy Kiss it should be no surprise that religious themes also play a role. On "Mortician's Suit Drag" Matty wavers between faith and nihilism. Played on the edge of distortion this cry for clarity is further engraved. He seems to have regained hope on "Black, Etc." albeit with a black-hearted love. Erik Satie's "Gymnopédies: III Lent" gets a Holy Kiss makeover with perfectly, natural fitting vocals. "Mr Bones" starts in line with the previous song, the piano provides for a tranquil, relaxed feel. After these moments of ease the tension is stirred up step by step during "A Slave Song". Sudden shifts in temperament typify this diverse track. When you think it won't get bluesier than "Silver Hand", listen to the title song. Matty's plaintive vocals sound just as woeful as his guitar. The placid "Hand in Hand" gives you the time to straighten up your anxious nerves. This reassuring closer makes sure you don't end these 47 minutes with a depression. Shot Love on a Back Line is an album that doesn't leave you unharmed though. Who hasn't had a heartache and wanted to let off steam? Turn on this record and The Holy Kiss will bring out your enmity and sorrow before they peck you on the cheeck and head out.
