Beyond E

<< Back

This is the first new album of Substanz-t since the latest release Electric Opium from 4 years ago. Especially the first half of this third cd of Substanz-t is very accomplished. You could as well call it ingenious. The music of Substanz-t contains many colours of sound and a constant relaxed flow. The music is predominantly approached out of triphop, with dreamlike and at times almost intoxicating and hypnotising atmospheres, such as can be heard in pretty accessible songs at the intersection of ambient and pop like ‘Orbit 32’, ‘Heavenly Connection’, Glow’, ‘Sonique’ or ‘A Moment Frozen in Time’. At times the music of Substanz-t reminds strongly of Massive Attack, which is showcased quite well in ‘Last State of Delirium’ or ‘Truth’. At other moments the music sounds pretty jazzy. The violin sounds, piano and sultry vocals of Verena Niksch enhance the soothing and slight erotic effect in the psychedelic electro-acoustic triphop music of Substanz-t. The second half of the album is originated more in ambient and percussive roots and unfortunately is a bit too experimental and has not enough character. It is a bit ambient-like and a bit industrial with an organic acoustic touch, but not tribal or ritual enough to constantly keep really interesting. With this Beyond-e has become a bit of an awkward album with two different faces too. The recording ends after the more experimental percussive and ambient tracks with the soothing sound of streaming water as background noise. As last note we can mention that FM Einheit from Einsturzende Neubauten with percussion and theremin plays a part on this quite special album too.
