Let's not beat around the bush, Lake of Tears is one of my favourite bands. The band totally convinced me with their show on 2005's Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig and I have been playing their albums regularly ever since. Unfortunately, most Lake of Tears albums tend be a bit precarious, so the question is if the new album "Moons and Mushrooms" could finally become an undoubted masterpiece.
The band switched labels to Dockyard 1 and I don't know if that's the reason, but Lake of Tears made a tremendous progress. The production is finally really good and the bands rocks harder than before. Generally speaking, the band is following the path they took with "Black Brick Road", but a little bit less melancholic and the uptempo rocksongs are dominant now. A perfect example of this is the pushing opening track "Last Purple Sky", but also "Waiting Counting" and "Head on Phantom" are typical Lake of Tears songs that get stuck in your head easily. I am even more impressed by the pounding "Children of the Grey", which will be a fantastic live song. For the lovers of Lake of Tears' more epic side, there is the last song "Planet of the Penguins", by which the band finishes the album in a very appropriate way.
Great band, wonderful album, to be blindly purchased by the fans. Hopefully, Lake of Tears can finally attract a wider audience with "Moons and Mushrooms", because the band has fully deserved it.
