For The Middle Class

<< Back

Guitar, banjo, pedal steel guitar, double bass, tabal machine, sarangi box, shruti box and a whole bunch more. All of them instruments used by Ivar Grydeland, Tonny Kluften and Ingar Zach to create exciting and intelligent compositions. On “For The Middle Class” are four of these masterpieces: 'The Appearance Of The Wise Child' (15 minutes), 'Serious Like A Pope' (5 minutes), 'Add A Key Of Humanity' (22 minutes) and 'Melon' (7 minutes). It’s very interesting to hear what different sounds this multi-instumental trio can produce.

The opening track starts very calm and serene, but slowly the sound evolves into a very hectic and alienating tempo, made with an instrument I don’t really recognize. If we’re halfway through the track the fast sounds rumble through in the background, while a new musical layer is introduced with some guitar playing Ry Cooder would be jealous of. To end with some beautiful and peaceful bassplaying. This delightful bassplaying is also the intro for the second song 'Serious Like A Pope'. This track remains pretty calm and even has a somewhat folky feeling to it. It’s nice to hear that the three gentlemen can also create shorter songs. The third and longest track is – just like the opening song – based on fast and hectic background sounds. And I get the same sensation: I’m very restless in the beginning because of the many sounds and high speed, but since so much time is taken to let the song evolve, I get hypnotized and end up in a dream-like intense listening state. Closing tune ‘Melon’ is another melow track, just like the shortest track ‘Serious Lika A Pope’. And again I’m reminded of Ry Cooder, especially his soundtrack for the movie “Paris, Texas”. But this track also could be present on for example Angelo Badalamenti’s soundtrack for “The Straight Story” (David Lynch).

With “For The Middle Class” Huntsville has really released an interesting album. The combination of folk music and drones/ambient this trio makes is very convincing and surprisingly well-performed. Keep your eyes and ears open for future material of these three gentlemen.
