This Russian synthpop formation was formed in october 2000. Emplosia exist of two girls from Saratov, Darja and Julia. They appeared on some electro and synthop compilations and now they've got their debut album out. They've come up with a fresh, accessible album. Influences range from Kraftwerk to Apoptygma Berzerk. Some tracks are in Russian, some in English.
The opener "Тоска" (Sadness) already reveals Emplosia's keen ear for catchy melodies. The breakbeat percussion during the verses give the track an elastic effect, the tunes are joyful but also a bit dusky. "Terra X" is in English and I have to admit that it now sounds somewhat less exotic. Russian lyrics add something mysterious. "Она" (she) has an uplifting chorus and chirpy tunes. "Daimonion" appeared on a Russian tribute to Project Pitchfork. Emplosia indeed lends quite some inspiration from German synthpop. On "Вектор" (Vector) this duo sounds very much like Welle:Erdball. Simple, memorable melodies. The more introvert, slower "Мне Бы" (I would have) shows the melancholic, dreamy side of Emplosia. With "Fire" the tempo goes up again. Like most of the faster tracks this song certainly has potential on the dancefloor. On "Girl From Hanau" the focus is on the mellow voices of Darja and Julia. "Запретная Зона" (Restricted Area) is somewhat alienating. As the CD comes to an end Emplosia gets more daring with a-tonal bleebs and melodies. Two bonus tracks have been added, these are more danceable remixes of "Мне Бы" (I would have).
The album gets better after repeated listens, that's a good sign. Synthpop may sound clinical sometimes, but Emplosia gives it a warm, poppy feel. In general, this duo delivers pleasant, attractive songs.
