Les Passages Jumeaux

<< Back

This is the second part of the Nyan trilogy after the already succesful first ‘Le Serpent Blanc – Le Serpent Rouge’ cd. This part is a bit more thoughtfully crafted and directed with more focuss than the first part, especially on the second cd of this double cd set. The first cd has the danceable club centered part, which at some moments might be very impressive due to the heavy beats and fierce climaxing ritual tribal trance parts, but this makes the first part a bit unsatisfying as well for me personally. In the heavier tracks the balance has gone too much towards the pounding side instead of the more subtle elements This Morn Omina is good at. Luckily this is compensated nicely on the excellent second cd.

On the first cd i find the tracks ‘Ma/i/nomai’ , ‘Naasseni’ and ‘(the) World Tree’ the best club centered tracks. The first mentioned track however is quite hardcore-techno minded and the second is the best one i think. The third track sounds mechanical and is heavy. The quiet but well achieved tracks are ‘Taninim’ with guest contributions of dr.Blood, Melissa Arnone and Elda di Matteo and ‘Doublelionrouti’ with guest appearances of Flint Glass and Tzolk’in. ‘Tsidii’ and ‘~aemae/ea/th~’ close this first disc quietly, time to let go some steam and to install yiourself firmly for listening to the second disc.

This second disc offers way more variation in atmospheres, is darker as well. Icy ambient atmospheres smoothly transcend into tribal heat. Suggestive sampling, vocies and sounds in combination with industrial electronics and tribal ambient ensure the music is directed straight towards the subconscious. Sometimes very percussive such as in ‘Agayu’ and sometimes the music is more towards psychedelic ambient comparable with the music of Empusae, such as can be heard in ‘Osun’ or ‘‘Yemeya / Olokun’. The last tracks, ‘Ibedyi’ and ‘~Oddua~’ remind strongly of material of Future Sound of London which is a big compliment.

Despite the minor flaws caused by the search for a satisfying direction for the band, it is all in all a very well achieved double cd this Les Passages Jumeaux release by This Morn’ Omina.
