Conetik is a synthpop band that seems strongly influenced by Pet Shop Boys, but is nonetheless capable of showing a face of their own. Very melodic synthpop is what they are good at. The music sometimes has a delicious wave feel and the vocals are very good. Carbon Elektriq is not irritating, nor does it bore anywhere. This is an achievement. The music does have strong 80’s connotations but contains many subtle and surprising sounds and experiments with elements from modern dance as well, like trance, dub and drum ’n bass, but this has been applied tastefully and sometimes reminds me of the melancholic side of Underworld. Listen for instance to ‘I Got Away’, My Recent Sins’ or ‘Turmoil’. This does not lose track at any point, it does not sound anything like futurepop mediocrity as well. On the contrary, the further the tracklist evolves the more challenging it musically speaking becomes. This was a clever decision. When we have a closer look at the songs we can conclude that there are a couple of very good songs. ‘Dead End’ is a great song. ‘Elektronova’ and ‘Angel’ are cool too. Even the cover of ‘Heart’ from Pet Shop Boys has been performed perfectly. This record is a very good album. Fans of quality popmusic do not do justice to themselves if they ignore this.
