"Girls Under Glass is a excentric, but overall underrated German band who are active for over 20 years in the wave and gothic musical world now. Once risen from the ashes of Cancer Barrack, residing in Hamburg and started out as a adventurous gothic band that after some years started to move in the direction of harsh electro-metal through the influences of Ministry and NIN and then started to experiment with influences from electro and pop music after a while. Girls Under Glass now is with a new label, and a sublabel (‘Cellardoor’) is founded especially for them to give them an appropiate place, which is completely justified with this band. This band has got it all to really make a break-through in these times with this musical constellation, if they aim their arrows on it. Girls Under Glass is a band that like Oomph! bears the seeds of success with them for many years already"
This is what i wrote about Girls under Glass in my review of the cd single ‘Ohne Dich’, the most dancable track of the new cd Zyklus. Zyklus could best be described as a cd that ends a period in which the band has developed themselves with the help of their labels towards becoming one of the flag carriers of a generation of bands that merge various different alternative styles of music into a modern crossover gothic sound. Now a new cycle begins with a signing on a different label, Dependent.
This new cd Zyklus is without exaggeration their best work until now. All that has been characteristic of Girls under Glass in the years seems to come together on this cd and with this the band sets itself apart with their own specific sound as innovative gothic band an proves to be a leading example in these modern times too.
Each song has its own character and is a good song. Either it is the quite hard melancholic ‘In die Einsamkeit’, or a more quiet track such as ‘Touch me’ with supporting female vocals, the dancable single ‘Ohne Dich’ sung together with Peter Spilles of Project Pitchfork, or the absolutely fantastic epic, again supported by female vocals, ‘Truly Living’. It all is a nice auditive trip through the world of Girls under Glass.
‘Deliverance’ is a bit more tranquil and doesn’t do much for me, but ‘Whatever Makes You Happy’ is a straightforward hitsong. ‘Under My Skin’ is a dreamy and quietly sung lovesong. ‘Love is in My World’ is again more uptempo, with added electronic sounds this has turned out to be a nice wave-rock song. After this it goes further with full throttle as the heavy staccato riffs of ‘Feuerengel’ indicate.
This cycle ends with three more great gems, ‘Wonderworld’, ‘In the Darkness’ and ‘I’m Alive’. This cd is spinning in my cd player for days and days now, and this will probably go on for some time. This simply is really good.
